Appointments

Just received a phone call from the genetics department. They are now booking appointments into 2011. Great. That was the second choice hospital, we still haven't heard from Sick Kids. We also have not heard from the plastic surgery department either, which is the more urgent appointment. We did get a call from the family doctor letting us know that the plastic surgery department did tell them that we will not get in until Feb. at the earliest.
The positive side to the long wait is that Brennyn will have more time to adjust to us and her new home before she has to have surgery and spend time at the hospital.

At least we are seeing the local paediatrician in two weeks. Our poor girl has developed some seriously dry skin. Avery had dry skin as well when she first came home, but not like this. Poor girls skin is cracking and she scratches at it causing bleeding. My friend bought us some amazing cream (it's so thick you can only put it on at night) so we are hoping it helps.

  1. We had an initial delay as well when M had her first hand surgery, she developed a fever and we were postponed an additional month--a good thing in the long run.
Are they separating syndactaly? I guess I totally missed her needing surgery. M had to have the rest of her syndactaly separated--we would not have done it all, but it was partially done in China and the scar tissue caused some problems and had to be completed; she also had to have two growth plates removed to avoid further expansion of her web.

If you have any questions relating to anything like that just let me know!

  2. Hi Wendy,

The nanny in China made sure to tell us that the operation that was done in China was "not good". Both guides kept mentioning that as well, and they told us they will do a better job in Canada. I don't know if they thought they had to reassure us or something, it was kind of strange.
Her fingers have been seperated but one finger is still bent and two could be further seperated. We will see what the surgeon says.

  3. The bending may just be due to the syndactaly--it is common, but splints may help to get a bit more straightening. You can see M's right hand curls a bit, that will always be that way.
As for the partial separation, it stinks because you may not have done it at all and now you have to complete it. M required two surgeries to repair the partial separation. I am not sure we would have done it at all as function was not improved--actually it is worse due to the first surgery. Make sure, if you do decide to seperate, that they take the skin from the back of the wrist...it is the only skin that will "keep up" with their growth. In China they took the skin from her under arm and it does not grow fast enough, she had new grafts here with the correct skin, but it is still an issue because you have to deal with old grafting.

Let me know how it goes. You can call me anytime too and we can talk more. Good luck!

  4. I know, that's the hard decision. She does function so well right now (both hands). I will have to call you to chat one of these days!

  5. I hear you on the dry skin, Lilah's is still dry now and agian and her hands and feet tend to peal every so often.

Now with the swimming lessons I have to be extra careful to cream cream cream! :)

Good luck with appointments and surgery. Poor little mite. The family we travelled with to China, their little girl had to have surgery on her little fingers too.

    Jill xx
