new obsession

This may seem strange, my husband thinks I'm a tad obsessed. I am trying to discover what ethnic minority my daughter is. I am 99% sure Avery is Han Chinese, but I am also 100% certain that Brennyn is not.
I think that it is important to discover this kind of information about my child.
This obsession could stem from the uncertainty of my roots. Sure, the paperwork my mom was given says that 3 of my bio-grandparents were German and one was English but how do I know how accurate that info is??
It has created this need to discover the roots of my children. I really don't think that is a bad thing.
The picture was from Christmas, Grandpa and his girls.

  1. We are prety sure that Lauren is Han and Paige is Tujia. Paige is from an area that is made up of Miao and Tujia people. I have e-mailed with 2 people from that area (one that is Miao and one that is Tujia). They feel from Paige's looks that she is Tujia.
I understand your wanting to figure this out!

  2. Hi Dayna:)
Have you tried the Ask Jane in China yahoo group? www.groups.yahoo.com/group/askjaneinchina
She told us that she thinks our Liya is 1/2 Japanese! What a shocker! She was found in an industrial area, where many Japanese-run businesses are.
You might give her a try....
    Best of Luck to you!

  5. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but there is no way someone can tell you what minority your child is from unless they know their birth family. Yes, characteristics, but not actual ethinicity. I think Jane has a lot of good information, but this new "service" is (imo) wrong. Even people from the region cannot give specifics unless they know a village. If she is from a village with that population you will have a pretty sure bet, but a city is up in the air--China is the land of migration.

  6. True enough Wendy. Brennyn is from a very large city which makes it difficult to find that information. Avery is from a small city, where everyone seems to know everyone (and we do have a good lead on birth family). It's just a burning curiosity for me, something that I'll do a little research on.

  7. I love the photo. And I also like how you brought this subject up, I've never thought about it before. How do you go about figuring it out?

  8. Hi Jill! I'm honestly not sure exactly if I can ever figure it out, but I'm sure I could get an idea. Brennyn has very distinctive features, which is what has made me so curious (light brown wavy hair, etc.).
